Periodontology
In dentistry, this term refers to everything related to the health of the gums, i.e. the periodontium—the attachment system that holds the tooth in place. In addition to the gums, the periodontium includes bones and tissues.
Periodontal diseases, gingivitis and periodontitis, along with caries, are one of the most common reasons for visiting the dentist, especially after the age of 40, when periodontitis (we used to say parodontosis) is the leading cause of tooth loss.
-
Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums. If left untreated, it will lead to periodontitis and ultimately tooth loss. Fortunately, gingivitis is easy to treat, so don't ignore the symptoms, but rush to the dentist if you notice that your gums are swollen or bleeding when you brush your teeth, or that it hurts to rub them with a toothbrush, or that you can't enjoy food that you like because of sensitive gums—e.g. bread crusts or an apple. Symptoms of gingivitis include receding gums, bearing of the tooth and bad breath.
-
Untreated gingivitis will lead to bigger problems and your dentist will have a lot more work to do. Symptoms of periodontitis are: bleeding gums, swelling and pain, receding gums, formation of pus pockets, loose teeth and loss of teeth, bad breath.
Periodontitis treatment includes:
— removal of soft and hard sediments (calculus)
— scraping and polishing teeth below gum level
— scaling—removal of diseased tissue and pus pockets. Of course, under local anesthesia so you don't feel pain.
— regenerative therapy—in the event that periodontitis has destroyed the jaw bone, rehabilitation is carried out with modern bioactive materials that stimulate bone regeneration. With regular and thorough oral hygiene (bacteria are the main cause of gingivitis) and preventive dental examinations, you will prevent periodontitis and keep all your teeth healthy.
